Sheep Shearing Day at Amazigh KM 0: The First Step in Rug Making

Amazigh KM 0, the heart of our Amazigh heritage, is located 36 km from Khemisset on the road to Meknès. The route takes us through rolling countryside, and after reaching Sfassif, an 8 km dirt track immerses us deeper into the rural landscape—where tradition and nature live in harmony.

It's the end of Eid al-Fitr, the celebration marking the conclusion of Ramadan, and we take this opportunity to visit family. A special event awaits us: the shearing of sheep, the first step in the age-old art of making Amazigh rugs.

A Seasonal Tradition: The Arrival of Summer

With summer approaching and rising temperatures signaling an important moment for shepherds: shearing season. The thick wool that protected the sheep through the cold months must now be removed, ensuring that the animals stay cool under the Moroccan sun. This practice, passed down through generations, is not only essential for the sheep's well-being but also marks the start of a long and intricate process—turning raw wool into beautifully woven rugs that carry the soul of Amazigh craftsmanship.

The Shearing Process: Skilled Craftsmanship

As dawn breaks, shearers gather before sunrise. At 7 a.m., the work begins. The sheep, patiently waiting in the pen, are brought out one by one. Their legs are gently tied to keep them steady, and the shearers, armed with large sharp scissors, get to work.

Unlike industrial wool production, no electric machines are used here. The process remains entirely manual, preserving both tradition and the integrity of the wool. The shearers, with steady hands and years of expertise, carefully remove the wool in smooth, controlled movements—ensuring the fleece stays in long, clean sections, ready for the next stage of preparation.

From Wool to Weaving: The First Step in Rug Making

Once shearing is complete, the freshly shorn wool is carefully stacked. This raw material, still carrying the scent of the countryside, will soon undergo cleaning, carding, and spinning before finally being woven into vibrant, hand-knotted rugs that define Amazigh craftsmanship. But that is a story for another time.

For now, the flocks of freshly shorn sheep roam freely—ready to embrace the Moroccan summer. The cycle of nature continues, along with the enduring traditions of Amazigh craft and culture.
